The program in this blog post was kindly gifted to me by Yoga With Maja in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Full disclosure policy here.
Ever since I had a baby, my periods have become even more painful. I mean, don’t get me wrong, they were painful to begin with. But wow, are they bad now. The cramps I experience, as well as the lower back pain, are enough to make me want to crawl back into bed for the whole day. I can’t really do that of course, because I have a baby. But I am finding ways to manage the pain. I was introduced to Pillow Yoga For Your Period by Yoga With Maja, which is designed to help manage the pain and discomfort caused by “that” time of the month.
I should probably say before I go further, that I didn’t actually HAVE my period when I tried out the program (it had literally just finished when Maja sent it to me – typical!). However, after having covid, my energy levels were depleted and I was in need of a way of easing myself back into exercising. Maja assured me that this program is perfect for low energy. So, with all of the information she gave me, I was excited to try it out!
The program consists of three nurturing yoga sequences, using specific moves designed to target the pain associated with periods. You can practice these on a mat, or in your bed, both with the aid of pillows to help you get as comfortable as possible in each of the poses. Also included are a bonus “Deep Yogic Breathing” tutorial and an amazing Yoga Nidra meditation.
Having tried it out, I can fully see how it is beneficial for when you are menstruating. I found the entire experience completely calming and regenerating, and it also helped tremendously with the back pain that I feel day in and day out (from bending down and lifting up a baby countless times throughout the day!). The meditation on it’s own can be practiced whenever you are feeling run down or stressed. Honestly, I found the entire thing so relaxing. Not going to lie, what with lying down surrounded by pillows, breathing deeply…I could have fallen asleep! It was absolute heaven for my body and soul.
I find moving is a great alternative pain relief from things like ibuprofen, but I know on your period sometimes that’s the last thing you want to do. Honestly though, the gentle, slow movements in Maja’s practice will help so much! You will feel so calm and and peaceful, and doing something good for your body when it needs some extra love!
I’m not saying I can’t wait for my next period…because I’m obviously not! But I am looking forward to using the pillow yoga practice to manage the pain.
