Travel Throwback: Loch Lomond, Scotland

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic lately.  Not sure why, but I keep thinking back to Scotland.  Steve took me to Loch Lomond for my birthday last August, where he actually proposed to me.  The trip was amazing – we stayed at The Lodge on Loch Lomond, which was an absolutely beautiful waterfront hotel.

I absolutely loved it there.  The lodge was situated right next a quaint little village called Luss, which made for some great shots.  It was so tiny, that the only restaurant in the village (besides the restaurants in the hotels of the surrounding areas) was attached to the General Store   How cute?! I went photo happy there – it was the kind of little village you think of when you think of the Highlands.

We spent time relaxing at the lodge, walking around, getting dinner and drinks while looking out at the beautiful sunset over the lake every night.  Steve reached out for a special request, and we were given a waterfront suite with an in-room sauna, which we took full advantage of!

We also explore the surrounding areas, visiting Helensburgh, a nearby coastal village.  We walked along the coast, enjoying the nice weather, eating ice cream from a local sweets shop.

On our drive back, we made a quick stop in Edinburgh and spent a few hours there.  I really wish we had been able to spend more time there! We walked up to Calton Hill, which is home to monuments like the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, and the City Observatory.  You can also see Arthur’s Seat, and literally all of Edinburgh. It’s a hell of a walk to get up there, but the view makes it worth it!

This trip was so special to me.  Not only because it’s where Steve proposed to me, but my late grandfather spent part of his childhood in Helensburgh, where his parents hailed from (he also spent part of it in England – he basically bounced around back and forth the Atlantic several times during WWII).  It was very emotional for me to be there, and spend time in the places that I know my grandfather spent time in.

I can’t wait to go back to Scotland.  It definitely holds a special place in my heart, and always will.
