When you’re upgrading your home, there are loads of different options. A functioning space is a vital component to making the home feel modern as well as aesthetically pleasing. There is nothing to say you can’t keep a touch of the old with the new, however, upgrading a couple of elements will allow you to create a space you’ll be happy to live in. Since we’re in the process of purchasing our first home, I’ve been researching the different home upgrades that can be made. I want to ensure that we live in a comfortable, functional home for years to come. Here’s a few ideas if you, too, are looking at some home upgrades!
Look at new flooring options.
Updating your floors can really streamline a space. Ceramic tile is a conventional solution but with a cold appearance and longevity. Porcelain can be a good choice but will take plenty more upkeep. On the other hand, ecological linoleum is returning in force. It is classed as sustainable to an extent, and there are plenty of colours and patterns to choose from when you look at lino. Architects today add that opaque PVC planks, imitation wood for example, can be put in the bathroom or kitchen. It adds a modern and sustainable touch.
Update your appliances or heating/cooling system.
When a home is functioning at it’s best, it makes running a home easier (and cost effective!). Upgrading your appliances is key to keep things running smoothly. Maybe your electrical system needs rewiring to keep up to modern day safety standards; if your AC isn’t working to 100% capability, you should consider 24 Hour AC Repair. When things are in good working order, your home will run much easier in general!
Give your walls a facelift with some new paint.
After re-flooring, turn your attention to the walls. If you’re going for a sleek, modern look, for example, use colours sparingly. Instead, have them as ‘feature walls’. This concept is so popular these days! On the ceilings, you can also opt for a little something “extra”. For example, choose a velvety texture over matte. Or choose timeless shades: black, white and mostly desaturated shades. You can also consider using 100% natural organic dyes, free from petrochemical resins. They’re a great sustainable option and you can still achieve a dramatic or subtle look on the walls depending on what you want.
Knock some walls down.
If you have the funds to do this, opening up a space can make a huge difference. The open floorplan concept is so popular, and with good reason. You can easily keep an eye on the kids while making dinner; or while having a conversation with the guests gathered around the coffee table. Steve and I plan on doing this eventually in the house we’re purchasing. Just remember that if you’re thinking of doing this, make sure you consider a few things likes cost, and how exactly you want the space to function. By opening up the space, you’re making a more inviting and warming atmosphere which also modernises it, and increases value in the long run.
I hope these tips were helpful! Now, off to Pinterest for some more home renovation ideas 🙂
